Panic of 1890

1890 · 19th century · Also known as Baring crisis

The Panic of 1890, also called the Baring crisis, was a financial crisis set off when the London bank Baring Brothers, heavily exposed to Argentine bonds, came close to collapse. The Bank of England organised a rescue that prevented a wider panic in London. In Argentina it brought a deep depression and the fall of President Miguel Juárez Celman.
