Parshvanatha

Also known as Parshva

Parshvanatha is the 23rd tirthankara of Jainism and the earliest Jain teacher widely regarded as a historical figure, traditionally placed about 250 years before Mahavira. Jain tradition says he was a prince of Varanasi, son of King Ashvasena, who renounced the world and taught a fourfold restraint. He is commonly shown sheltered by a canopy of serpent hoods, and Shikharji in Jharkhand is revered as the place of his liberation.
