Partitions of Poland

1772–1795 · 18th century

The Partitions of Poland were three divisions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by Russia, Prussia and Austria in 1772, 1793 and 1795. The first took about a third of its territory; the second and third followed attempts at reform and the Kościuszko Uprising, and ended the state altogether. Prussia gained Royal Prussia, Danzig, Posen and Warsaw. Poland did not regain independence until 1918.
