c. 590 · 6th century · Also known as Regula Pastoralis, Liber Regulae Pastoralis

Pastoral Care (Regula Pastoralis) is a treatise written by Pope Gregory the Great around 590 on the duties and conduct of bishops and clergy. Widely read in the Middle Ages, it was translated into Old English in the circle of Alfred the Great, with a preface in the king's name lamenting the decline of learning in England and announcing his programme of translations.
