Paul Alvarus

c. 800–861 · 9th century · Also known as Paulus Alvarus

Paul Alvarus was a Christian scholar and poet of ninth-century Córdoba, a friend of Eulogius, whose biography he wrote. A defender of the Martyrs of Córdoba, he wrote the Indiculus luminosus (854), in which he lamented that young Christians preferred Arabic poetry and learning to Latin, an often-cited witness to the Arabisation of al-Andalus.
