Pellestrina
Pellestrina is a long, narrow barrier island between the Venetian lagoon and the Adriatic Sea, south of the Lido and north of Chioggia. Its fishing villages were among the old lagoon settlements, and in 810 it was overrun by the Frankish king Pepin of Italy. In the 18th century the republic protected it from the sea with the great stone sea walls known as the Murazzi.
