Penang

Penang is an island and state on the north-west coast of the Malay Peninsula, developed by the British as a port from 1786. It became a major trading entrepôt on the Strait of Malacca. Accounts of the Srivijaya Empire place it in a line of entrepôts, including Malacca and Singapore, that followed the commercial model established by Srivijaya.
