Peruvian War of Independence
The Peruvian War of Independence ended Spanish rule in Peru, the stronghold of royalist power in South America. José de San Martín's expedition landed in 1820 and proclaimed independence in Lima in July 1821, but royalist armies held the highlands. Simón Bolívar and Antonio José de Sucre won the decisive battles of Junín and Ayacucho in 1824, and the last royalists at Callao surrendered in 1826.
