Peter of Castile

1334–1369 · 14th century · Also known as Peter the Cruel, Peter I of Castile, Pedro I of Castile

Peter of Castile, called the Cruel, was King of Castile and León from 1350 to 1369. His reign was marked by conflict with the nobility and a civil war against his half-brother Henry of Trastámara, backed by France, while Peter was aided by Edward the Black Prince, who won the Battle of Nájera for him in 1367. Henry killed him at Montiel in 1369. Peter built the Mudéjar palace in the Alcázar of Seville.
