Philaretos Brachamios

11th century · 11th century

Philaretos Brachamios was an Armenian general in Byzantine service who, after the defeat at Manzikert in 1071, built an independent principality in Cilicia and northern Syria. At its height it included Antioch, Edessa, Melitene and Marash. He nominally recognised the Byzantine emperors but lost his lands to the Seljuk Turks by the late 1080s.
