Philip VI of France

1293–1350 · 14th century · Also known as Philip of Valois

Philip VI was king of France from 1328 to 1350, the first of the House of Valois. His accession over the claim of Edward III of England led to the Hundred Years' War, in which he was defeated at Crécy in 1346. Despite the war and the Black Death, he enlarged the royal domain in 1349 by buying Montpellier from James III of Majorca and the Dauphiné from Humbert II.
