Philomelus

d. 354 BCE · 4th century BCE

Philomelus was a Phocian general who began the Third Sacred War. In 356 BCE, after the Amphictyonic Council fined the Phocians, he seized Delphi and used its treasures to hire mercenaries. He defeated the Locrians and Boeotians in several battles but was defeated at Neon in 354 BCE and threw himself from a cliff; Onomarchus succeeded him.
