Pope Zachary

d. 752 · 8th century · Also known as Pope Zacharias

Pope Zachary was a Greek-speaking pope from Calabria who held office from 741 to 752. He negotiated with the Lombard kings to protect Rome and supported the church reforms of Boniface in Francia. When Pippin the Short asked whether the man with real power should be king, Zachary approved, and in 751 Pippin deposed the last Merovingian, Childeric III, beginning the Carolingian alliance with the papacy.
