Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island is the smallest province of Canada, an island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Known to the French as Île Saint-Jean, it passed to Britain in 1763, became a separate colony in 1769 and was renamed after Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, in 1799. Most of its land was granted to absentee proprietors, a grievance that shaped its politics until it joined Canada in 1873.
