Balfour Declaration

1917 · 20th century

The Balfour Declaration was a public statement issued by the British government on 2 November 1917, in a letter from Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lord Rothschild, supporting 'a national home for the Jewish people' in Palestine. It also stated that the rights of existing non-Jewish communities should not be prejudiced. The League of Nations incorporated it into the Mandate for Palestine in 1922.
