Princess Bety

fl. 1750 · 18th century

Bety was a princess of the Betsimisaraka of eastern Madagascar, the daughter of Ratsimilaho, founder of the Betsimisaraka confederation. She married a French soldier, Jean-Onésime Filet, known as La Bigorne, and in 1750 ceded Île Sainte-Marie to the French East India Company. The French post there was short-lived, but the cession became the basis of France's later claim to the island.
