Adam Baldridge
Adam Baldridge was an English former pirate who from 1691 ran a fortified trading post on Île Sainte-Marie off the north-east coast of Madagascar. Backed by New York merchants, notably Frederick Philipse, he sold supplies, liquor and arms to pirates operating in the Indian Ocean and bought their plunder and enslaved captives. He left the island in 1697 after a local uprising and returned to New York.
