Proletariat
The proletariat is the class of wage workers who own no means of production and live by selling their labour, a central concept in Marxist theory. Rapid industrialisation in the late Russian Empire created an urban proletariat concentrated in the major cities. Lacking trade unions and political outlets, it became a key base for the revolutionary movements of 1905 and 1917.
