Puebla is a state of central Mexico, east of Mexico City, with its capital at the city of Puebla. Its highlands, bordered by the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Pico de Orizaba, were home to major Mesoamerican centres such as Cholula and Cantona. The city of Puebla, founded by the Spanish in 1531, is famous for its Talavera pottery and for the Mexican victory over the French on 5 May 1862.
