Queen Shima

7th century · 7th century · Also known as Ratu Shima

Queen Shima was a ruler of Holing, or Kalingga, on the north coast of Java, said in the New Book of Tang to have been chosen as ruler in 674. Chinese and Javanese tradition remembers her for strict justice: a bag of gold left on the road lay untouched for years until her own son touched it with his foot, and she ordered him punished.
