Huining (monk)

fl. 664–665 · 7th century

Huining was a Chinese Buddhist monk from Sichuan who sailed to the Javanese kingdom of Heling, known as Kalingga, in 664 or 665. There he worked with the local scholar Jnanabhadra to translate a Buddhist scripture on the Buddha's final nirvana into Chinese. His journey is recorded by the pilgrim Yijing as evidence of Java's role as a Buddhist centre.
