Quetzaltenango
Quetzaltenango, called Xelajú or Xela, is the second-largest city of Guatemala, in the western highlands. Near it Pedro de Alvarado defeated the K'iche' in 1524, and it became a Spanish town. From 1838 to 1840 it was the capital of the breakaway State of Los Altos until Rafael Carrera reconquered it, and it later prospered from the coffee economy.
