Quraysh

The Quraysh were the dominant Arab tribe of Mecca, to which the Prophet Muhammad belonged. Its Umayyad clan initially opposed Muhammad before his victory in 630 CE. Muawiyah of this clan founded the Umayyad Caliphate, turning the caliphate into a hereditary monarchy.
