Rakhigarhi

c. 3300–1900 BCE · Also known as Rakhi Garhi

Rakhigarhi is a village and archaeological site in the Ghaggar plain of Haryana, India, the remains of one of the five largest settlements of the Indus Valley Civilisation. Its remains span the pre-Harappan, Early Harappan and Mature Harappan phases, the last about 2600–1900 BCE. Most scholars put its main mounds at 80 to over 100 hectares; the Archaeological Survey of India's figure of 300–350 hectares includes outlying mounds. Excavations since the 1960s have found paved streets, drains and a cemetery, and DNA from one skeleton, published in 2019, showed no trace of steppe ancestry.
