Ranoji Scindia

d. 1745 · 18th century · Also known as Ranoji Shinde

Ranoji Scindia was a Maratha commander and the founder of the Scindia dynasty of Gwalior. Rising in the service of Peshwa Baji Rao I, he received a share of the revenues of Malwa around 1731 and ruled from Ujjain. His sons, above all Mahadaji Scindia, made the family one of the strongest Maratha houses, and later rulers moved their capital to Gwalior.
