Rao Surjan

r. 1554–1585 · 16th century · Also known as Surjan Singh of Bundi

Rao Surjan was the Hada ruler of Bundi who held the great fortress of Ranthambore. Besieged by Akbar, he surrendered it in 1569 on favourable terms and entered Mughal service, becoming a respected commander and governor. His submission set the pattern for Bundi's long service in Mughal armies, while rival Rajput states such as Mewar continued to resist.
