Redbad

d. 719 · 8th century · Also known as Radbod, King of the Frisians

Redbad, also Radbod, was king of the Frisians from about 680 until his death in 719. He fought the Frankish mayors of the palace, losing Dorestad and Utrecht to Pippin of Herstal around 690, but after Pippin's death in 714 he recovered them and defeated Charles Martel near Cologne in 716. He opposed the Christian missions of Willibrord and Boniface, and later legend made him a symbol of Frisian independence.
