Reunions

1679–1697 · 17th century · Also known as Chambers of Reunion, Réunions

The Reunions were Louis XIV's policy of annexing territories on France's eastern border after the Treaty of Nijmegen of 1679. Special courts, the Chambers of Reunion, examined old feudal ties to claim lands in Alsace, Lorraine and elsewhere as dependencies of places already French, and troops occupied them, including Strasbourg in 1681. Most were returned by the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697, though Strasbourg and Alsace stayed French.
