Rhenish-German National Convention

1793 · 18th century

The Rhenish-German National Convention was an assembly elected under French supervision in the territories on the left bank of the Rhine occupied by French revolutionary armies. Meeting in Mainz from 17 March 1793, it proclaimed a free state from Landau to Bingen, known as the Republic of Mainz, and days later asked for union with France. It is regarded as the first parliament in Germany elected on democratic principles; Prussian forces retook Mainz in July 1793.
