Rhenish Hesse

Also known as Rheinhessen

Rhenish Hesse is a region on the left bank of the Rhine around Mainz and Worms, known for its vineyards. The Congress of Vienna settlement gave it to the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1816 in exchange for Westphalia, and it remained one of Hesse's three provinces until 1945. It then became part of the new state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
