Riau Archipelago
The Riau Archipelago is a group of islands south of Singapore, including Batam, Bintan and the Lingga islands, now part of Indonesia's Riau Islands province. From the 16th century they were part of the Johor sultanate, and Bintan became a seat of its court and a centre of Malay culture. The Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 placed them in the Dutch sphere.
