Roanoke River
The Roanoke River rises in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and flows south-east into North Carolina, where it reaches Albemarle Sound. Its lower valley was home to northern Tuscarora towns, which under Tom Blount stayed out of the war of 1711. The river shares its name with Roanoke Island, site of the lost English colony of the 1580s, and with the city of Roanoke in Virginia.
