Roger Casement

1864–1916 · 19th century

Roger Casement was an Irish-born British consul whose 1904 report on atrocities in the Congo Free State, and later on the Putumayo region of Peru, made him a leading humanitarian. Turning to Irish nationalism, he sought German help for an Irish rising, was arrested on landing in Ireland in 1916 and was hanged for treason in London.
