Ross, Scotland
Ross is a region of the northern Highlands of Scotland stretching from the Moray Firth to the west coast. It became an earldom in the early 13th century, and the claim of Donald, Lord of the Isles, to the earldom led to the Battle of Harlaw in 1411. The Lords of the Isles held the earldom from 1437 until John of Islay forfeited it to the crown in 1475. It later formed the county of Ross and Cromarty.
