Rouran Khaganate

Also known as Rouran

The Rouran Khaganate was a nomadic confederation that dominated the Mongolian steppe from the late fourth to the mid-sixth century CE. The Göktürks under Bumin of the Ashina clan were originally its vassals, and their revolt destroyed Rouran power in the 550s. Accounts of the Gokturk Empire describe this rupture as the origin of the Göktürk state, while accounts of the Xiongnu Empire list the Rouran among the steppe powers that inherited the Xiongnu military tradition.
