Rubattino shipping company

Also known as Rubattino

The Rubattino shipping company was a Genoese steamship company that purchased land at Assab Bay on the Red Sea coast in 1869. In 1882 the Italian government assumed control of the site. Accounts of the Italian Empire treat this acquisition as Italy's first colonial foothold in Africa, which developed into the colony of Eritrea by 1890.
