Rule of law
The rule of law is the principle that all people and institutions, including governments, are subject to and accountable under publicly known laws applied equally. It is closely associated with British constitutional traditions. Accounts of the British Empire note the paradox that the liberal values the empire claimed to embody, including the rule of law, gave colonial subjects ideological weapons to challenge imperial rule.
