Saadian Tombs

16th century · 16th century

The Saadian Tombs are the royal necropolis of the Saadi dynasty beside the Kasbah Mosque in Marrakesh. Built mainly under Ahmad al-Mansur in the late sixteenth century, they include the richly decorated Hall of the Twelve Columns with Carrara marble and carved cedar. The Alaouite sultan Mulay Ismail walled off the site, and it was rediscovered by the French in 1917.
