1988 · 20th century · Also known as Reform Movement of Lithuania

Sąjūdis, the Reform Movement of Lithuania, was a political movement founded in Vilnius in June 1988 that led Lithuania's campaign for independence from the Soviet Union. Headed by the musicologist Vytautas Landsbergis, it won a majority in the elections to the Supreme Council in February 1990. On 11 March 1990 that council declared the restoration of Lithuanian independence, the first such declaration by a Soviet republic.
