Samori Ture

Samori Ture was a West African Muslim leader who built a large state, often called the Wassoulou Empire, in the late nineteenth century. He resisted French colonial expansion for many years before his capture in 1898. Accounts of the Sokoto Caliphate list his state-building among the movements that drew intellectual and ideological inspiration from the Sokoto model.
