San Juan del Norte
San Juan del Norte, officially San Juan de Nicaragua, is a town at the mouth of the San Juan River on Nicaragua's Caribbean coast. Its position at the eastern end of a potential canal route made it a strategic prize: British forces seized it in 1848 and renamed it Greytown, and in 1854 a US warship bombarded it. It prospered briefly as the Atlantic terminus of the Accessory Transit Company's route during the California Gold Rush.
