San Pedro Sula

1536 · 16th century

San Pedro Sula is the second-largest city of Honduras and its main industrial and commercial centre, in the fertile Sula valley of the north-west. Founded by the Spanish in 1536, it grew rapidly from the late nineteenth century with the railway and the banana companies, and later with manufacturing, including garment assembly plants. In the 2010s gang violence made it one of the world's most violent cities.
