Mosquito Coast
The Mosquito Coast is the Caribbean lowland of eastern Nicaragua and north-eastern Honduras, home to the Miskito people and Creole and Garífuna communities. From the seventeenth century the Miskito kings were allied with Britain, which maintained a protectorate over the coast. Britain recognised Honduran sovereignty over the northern part in 1859 and Nicaraguan sovereignty over the rest in 1860, and Nicaragua incorporated the autonomous Mosquito Reserve by force in 1894.
