Sangro

The Sangro is a river of central Italy, about 117 km long, rising in the Abruzzo Apennines and flowing into the Adriatic south of Ortona. In antiquity its lower valley lay in the land of the Frentani. In November and December 1943 Allied forces fought a costly battle to cross it against German defences of the Winter Line.
