Sangye Gyatso

1653–1705 · 17th century · Also known as Desi Sangye Gyatso

Sangye Gyatso was regent, or desi, of Tibet from 1679 under the Fifth Dalai Lama. He concealed the Dalai Lama's death in 1682 for some fifteen years while completing the Potala Palace, and wrote major works on medicine, astronomy and history. His rivalry with Lhazang Khan of the Khoshut ended when Lhazang's forces captured and killed him in 1705.
