Potala Palace

1645–1694 · 17th century

The Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, was the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and the seat of the Tibetan government. The Fifth Dalai Lama began it in 1645 on the Red Hill, on the site of an earlier palace attributed to Songtsen Gampo, and the central Red Palace was completed in 1694. With over a thousand rooms, tombs of Dalai Lamas and many chapels, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
