Songtsen Gampo

c. 605–649 · 7th century

Songtsen Gampo was the emperor who built the Tibetan Empire in the early 7th century, ruling until 649 with Lhasa as his capital. He conquered Zhangzhung in western Tibet, married princesses from Tang China and, by tradition, Nepal, and is credited with introducing Buddhism and a writing system based on Indian scripts. Tibetan tradition counts him as the first of the three dharma kings.
