Songkhla

Also known as Singora

Songkhla is a city in southern Thailand, on a narrow strip of land between the Gulf of Thailand and the Songkhla Lake lagoon. Early in the 17th century a Muslim ruler, Dato Mogol, founded a fortified port at Singora on the hills nearby, which traded with the Dutch and English until Ayutthaya destroyed it in 1680. The present city was laid out on the eastern shore in the 19th century and is the capital of Songkhla province.
