Postumus

d. 269 · 3rd century · Also known as Marcus Cassianius Latinius Postumus

Postumus was a Roman general who founded the breakaway Gallic Empire. A commander on the Rhine, he was proclaimed emperor by his troops in 260, after Valerian's capture by the Persians, and killed Gallienus' son Saloninus at Cologne. He ruled Gaul, Germania, Britain and Hispania, defending the Rhine frontier, until his own soldiers murdered him in 269.
