Sargis I Jaqeli

13th century · 13th century

Sargis I Jaqeli was the ruler of Samtskhe in southern Georgia in the second half of the 13th century and founder of the principality's independence. By securing direct recognition from the Mongol Ilkhanate, he placed his lands outside the authority of the Georgian kings, and his descendants ruled Samtskhe as hereditary atabegs.
